The Shropshire Hills are an important area for birds as they lie between the Welsh uplands and the plains of Central England. The Hills support several species which are of conservation status, including Peregrine Falcons, Merlins, Curlew, Snipe and Ring Ousels.

The Hills are rich in flora, and the woods around Church Stretton all have stunning displays of spring bulbs. Wild orchids abound on Wenlock Edge, a 19 mile long limestone escarpment east of Church Stretton, half of which is owned by the National Trust.
